The auction venue

This is the electronic/internet version of our normal paper catalogue. Some changes have been effected so as to save file space and transfer/download time. Most illustrations and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you need.

The sale is arranged in the following order;
    Lots 1-80 Collections and Mixed Lots
    Lots 81-247 Lots by country A-Z, excluding U.K.
    Lots 248-369 United Kingdom
    Lots 370-494 Collectables (Non-Philatelic)
If you are new to our auctions, please see our general auction information page.

The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success (and are not normally sold at less than about two-thirds of estimate). Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, or post.
New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale.

“A National Anthem for
Scotland

Having presented this talk/concert in May, Bob Murray has been asked back to do it again, this time as part of the official “Scotland’s Winter Festivals” programme of events. He’ll present eight songs often thought of as candidates for anthem, and try to explain the strengths and weaknesses of each. He’ll attempt to define what an anthem should be, and discuss how Scotland might progress to a decision. Do we need to make a choice? If so, how do we do it?”           [Buy tickets at this link.]

      Ü     Saudi Arabia; this interesting group of lots is all from the same collection, and offers a fine
              coverage of this early and often difficult period. We recognise that many people are wary of
              buying some of these issues due to the prevalence of fakes and forgeries, but offer the
              following pedigree;
              The original collector of these stamps worked at the Jeddah office of a British-Sudanese
              company. We have copies of some letters from 1927 and 1930 which show that he was
              the local contact for Whitfield King & Co. of
Ipswich (at the time major stamp dealers,
              publishers, and new issue suppliers) and that it was he who supplied them with their
Hejaz
              new issues at that period. Buyers can have photocopies of these letters on request.

    279     1883-84 “Lilac & Green” set (10) used. Above average for these, though still not of top
              grade. Best are probably the 2d, 6d, and 1/-, worst are 3d and 4d - the 9d is reasonable with
              light c.d.s. (but colour a bit off and a few short perfs). Well short of an “A1” set, but much
              better than most sets we see.         ..                 ..               ..                   ..               ..                £100.
    280     1887-1900 “Jubilee” set (14) fine and fresh unmounted mint. The 2d has minor crease, 4d

    285     1902-13 KE7 set (15) fine and fresh unmounted mint. Couple of wee wrinkles on 4d orange,
              7d a little toned, and the 1/- has probably had some perforations “corrected”. (Would be
              described by most simply as “very fine u.m.”.)  ..               ..                   ..        £240.

€uro Currency; We are happy to accept Euro cash payments in our shop. We normally allow the market rate rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the time of writing, the market rate is 0.7057, so we are allowing 70p per Euro (which is probably better than your bank will give you). You can also pay for lots in this auction by Euro banknotes (postal customers please confirm before sending). We also accept payments in our shop in Euros, and we buy the old “legacy” currencies, as well as other coins and notes.

Methods of payment accepted at auction;
              Cash (Sterling, Euro notes)                              Cheque (from established customers)
              Debit Card (no surcharge)                               Credit Card (no surcharge on UK accounts)
Methods of payment accepted after auction; all the above plus
              Direct bank transfer to our account (Robert Murray Stamp Shop, sort code 82-45-05, account
              80371787) but please quote invoice number, and email or phone to advise us of payment,

plus PayPal by arrangement (additional fee of 4% UK, 5% foreign)
              NB; credit card payments
after posting of lots incur a 1.9% surcharge (higher for foreign).

Vendors please note that we are making a small increase in our auction commission charge to vendors, from 10% to 12%. This will take effect from our first auction of 2016.

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next auction is planned for 1 February 2016.
This auction is conducted according to the "Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale" (available if requested).
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
 Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 12% of the sale price, plus administration fee of £1.50 per lot + £6.50 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request. Minimum charge £12 per vendor in one auction (£10 plus vat).
 We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
 Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
 (Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy (colour copies A4 pages; 1st copy 50p, 30p per page thereafter), plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently £9 for inland UK addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £9 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are Europe £12, overseas £15.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
 Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131 551 2331 (mobile 07974 962649).
 Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
Any invoices remaining unpaid fourteen days from the auction date (or after delivery to a postal buyer) will attract interest at the rate of 2% per month or part thereof.
