STEWART’S-MELVILLE CLUB PAVILION, 523 FERRY ROAD, EDINBURGH On view at Pavilion on afternoon of sale (see details later), and at Shop during business hours (Tue, Thu, Fri 10am-6pm, Wed 2pm-9pm, and Sat 10am-7pm) for one week prior to sale, or by appointment. |
|
This is the
electronic/internet
version of our normal paper catalogue. Some changes have been effected
so as to save file space and transfer/download time. Most illustrations
and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the
easiest
form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you
need.
| The sale is arranged in
the following
order; Lots 1-161 are Banknotes (see separate catalogue) Lots 162-577 is the Stamps and Collectables Auction |
|
The figure at the end of each description is our estimate, in pounds sterling. Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success. Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.
After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.
This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.
| NEW BIDDERS; Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, or post. New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale. |

There are no reserves, other than our general rule of not starting the
bidding
below about two-thirds of
the estimate. However, on any UK lots where two-thirds would be less
than face
value, the bidding will start at face value.
All notes, rules, instructions etc. appearing in the Stamps and
Collectables
Auction catalogue apply also to this auction. The same bid form can be
used for
either or both auctions, as numbers run straight through.
Reference numbers
for U.K. notes
are from "The Banknote Yearbook" (2007, Token Publishing). Grading of
condition is based on the descriptions given there, which are given
here in a
précis form.
Condition is of course subjective, and
sometimes a decision has to be made to put a note into a particular
grading
even though is doesn't strictly match (for example and Unc. note with a
pinhole
might be EF).
In some cases we have quoted catalogue prices with a question mark.
This is
where the catalogue does not quote a price for that grade, and we have
interpolated
or extrapolated.
Uncirculated
(Unc.)
Entirely as issued with absolutely no marks, folds,
etc.
About Uncirculated (AU)
Uncirculated
though with perhaps the tiniest of marks or dents from handling
in the bank. The grade most
people would call "Unc." but the very fussy
might
not.
Extremely Fine (EF)
Clean,
fresh, firm paper, square corners, but some light folds or perhaps just
one stronger crease.
Very Fine (VF)
Quite
crisp, slight marks/dirt, several folds, no tears, corners not rounded
but
not quite the sharp square. Should
still be very attractive.
Fine (F)
Obviously
handled, with folds (but not causing central hole), creases, some
dirt/grubbiness (though not ugly),
tears in the marginal area (not into design).
Looks
ok but numerous signs of age and handling.
Very Good (VG)
The
note will be all in one piece, but might have tears into the design, a
central hole, rounded corners,
pinholes, stains or dirty marks.
Good (G)
As
VG but with even more wear, staining, writing, etc.
Fair, Poor, etc.
Worse
than anything above, with numerous serious faults.
VIEWING;
Handling of individual notes will not be allowed. All notes
that are being sold individually will be displayed in plastic wallets.
Any
customer wishing to see notes outside these wallets will be assisted by
a
member of staff, but this on a limited basis. If you have any queries
on this,
please ask in advance.
Viewing of all lots in our shop for the week before (times on front
cover), and
at auction venue only on sale day 3pm to 4.50pm. (If we can be set up a
little
before 3pm we shall do so.)
