On 11 August 1999 (the date of issue of the Solar Eclipse miniature sheet) we launched a new, collector-friendly, price-competitive service to the philatelic community.

The range of stock of the Post Office - the service of a Stamp Shop !

Ever since the Philatelic Counter at the old Edinburgh GPO closed down, collectors have found it more difficult to obtain the supplies they want, with the level of service they used to expect. We hear similar stories from many parts of the UK - where there used to be a dedicated philatelic counter, there are perhaps now only limited products available through a Post Shop or similar.

We now provide that lost service !
.. and we match the prices.

Simply, as the service of our own "British Philatelic Bureau" we hold in stock everything on the Royal Mail Stamps stock list (with the exception of the complete coils, sheets, and boxes of stamps, postal stationery, aerogrammes and aircards, unless we identify a demand for these), and sell it at the same price as charged by the Post Office. We also try to satisfy any regular demand for such things as cylinder blocks, gutter pairs, and so on, so that we avoid being "caught out" by shortages. We will be happy to oblige individual customers whenever possible.

Furthermore, we can go one better !

FIRST DAY COVERS (- do you really want to have a collection the same as a hundred thousand other people, with a resale value of maybe 20p to 30p per cover ?)
We service first day covers of every special issue (commemoratives, greetings, miniature sheet, and Christmas issues) with the special handstamp of our choice, and we hold these in stock at normal Post Office price (our prices are calculated in a different way, so they may vary up or down by just a few pence) for a full six months from the date of issue. Our covers will have only a light pencil address. This is a service we have often heard requested especially by foreign visitors.
STANDING ORDERS; Customers are able, in a similar way to that done with Royal Mail, to lodge funds with us, against which we will put aside new stamps, booklets, covers, etc. for them.

PLEASE NOTE that any payments by credit/debit card for goods under the above services will be subject to the charges raised by our own bank (that is 1.9% on Visa and MasterCard payments, 18p per Maestro or Delta transaction). Customers making other purchases from our shop, which would not normally attract a charge, and who pay by debit card, will not have to pay the surcharge. More information.

In our auctions, collections of the standard British Philatelic Bureau/Royal Mail first day covers, from any period in about the last thirty years, tend to sell for anything from 15p to 30p per cover, before commission. This is fairly standard throughout the U.K. philatelic trade. Our bank charges us 1.9% on credit card transactions, 18p per Switch or Delta transaction. The service we are advertising here is being provided at such a low margin that we cannot absorb the costs. Sorry !
Royal Mail - Tallents House (Royal Mail's service to stamp collectors) charges, for individual orders for first day covers, the face value of the stamps, plus 30p for the envelope, plus 11p per cover (?), plus v.a.t. at 17%.
