E  It was so rare and so beautiful, G

A E Those days will be remembered, C G
A E Beyond out in the Naul,  C G
A E Listening to the master’s notes,  C G
A B7 As gently they did fall. C D7
E Oh . . . . the music, G
A E As Seamus he did play,  C G
E A But the thaw crept over the mantle white, G C
A B7 E And turned it back to clay. D D7 G

A E He gazed at the embers in reflection,  C G
A E He called up lost verses again,  C G
A E He smiled at a roguish recollection,  C G
E A B7 E While his fingers gripped the glass to stem the pain. G C D7 G
A E When knocked on, his door would always open,  C G
A E With a welcome he’d bid the time of day,  C G
E A Though we came when the last flakes were melted, G C
A B7 E While it lay upon the ground we stayed away.  D D7 G
