Bids are accepted above or below this figure, although bids below about 75% or 80% estimate only have a tiny chance of success (and are not normally sold at less than about two-thirds of estimate). Estimates are in Pounds Sterling do not include the 10% buyer's premium.
After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.
This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by phone, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.
| NEW BIDDERS; Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, or post. New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale. |

this number to make bids or to check on
prices after the auction – or any time you want to speak to us – from
anywhere
in the UK for the cost of a local rate phone call.
Friday
18 March;
Please note that our shop will be closed all day on the Friday after
this auction.
€uro Currency; We are happy to
accept Euro cash payments in our shop. We normally allow the market
rate
rounded down to the next whole penny. For example, at the time of
writing, the
market rate is 0.8492, so we are allowing 84p per Euro (which is
probably
better than your bank will give you). You can also pay for lots in this
auction
by Euro banknotes (postal customers please confirm before sending). We
also
accept payments in
our shop in
Euros, and we buy the old “legacy” currencies, as well as other coins and
notes.
We are now stocking the
magazine Stamp and Coin Mart in our
shop. This is a monthly publication, priced at £3.20, and is a
good general
interesting read. If we have copies available we’ll bring them along to
the
auctions.

Estimate.
VAT
on Postal Services. As from 31 January VAT has been applicable
to some
Royal Mail services. In general terms, standard services are still
exempt
(first and second class post, basic Special Delivery, standard parcels,
standard foreign services) but many “enhanced” services are now liable
to the
tax at 20%. Where the tax is charged, it is not just on the extra
amount for
the enhanced service but on the total amount.
For
example, a
standard UK parcel up to 4kg was £7.06, and compensation up to
£100
cost £1 extra, making £8.06. Now the standard parcel is
still £7.06, plus £1
insurance, plus 20% vat on the total price, making £9.67. So the
£1 insurance
is in effect costing £2.61.
This
will have the
following possible effect on our customers receiving goods from
us;
{a} Many packages will cost exactly the same as before.
{b} Some will cost a full 20% more than previously.
{c} Where it makes sense and is easy to apply, we will
sometimes choose to send packages by the standard vat-free service, but
cover
it through our own insurance policy. This will appear on invoices
simply as
“insurance”, and will only be done where it gives the customer a
worthwhile
saving.
An
then of course,
there’s going to be general increases in postal rates from 6 April ……
Most
auctions include a few lots which, due to their large size or weight
compared
to value, will not be taken to the auction venue. They must therefore
be viewed
at our shop during the previous week, and successful purchasers will be
responsible for their collection from us. The symbol for these is “ Ä”, and very generally speaking,
there's a cut-off
point of about £2 or £3 estimate per kilo weight.
If you attend the auction and buy any of these lots, you can either
call at the
shop during normal opening hours, or it is sometimes possible to
arrange to
pick up after the auction has finished (though please first speak to
Mr. Murray
to arrange this).
NORMAL BIDDING
STEPS
We
list here our normal bid steps for your information. This may be of
help to bidders
who are unable to
attend the sale, as any written bids received which do not fit our
normal
pattern would usually be taken
down to the next normal step. (We keep to these increments as much as
possible,
but do sometimes
change if circumstances make it desirable.)
Up to £20, bids are in £1 steps.
From £20 to £30, bids are in £2 steps.
>From £30 to £50, bids are in £2 or £3 steps
(i.e. £30, £32, £35, £38, £40, £42,
£45, £48, £50).
>From £50 to £100 in £5 steps.
From £100 to £200,
bids are in £10 steps.
>From £200 to £300, bids are in £20 steps.
>From £300 to £500, bids are in £20 or £30,
and
above this in 5% to 10% steps.
Abbreviations; a
list of abbreviations and symbols
used is from time to time included in the auction catalogue. We suggest
that
you keep a copy for future reference.

CREDIT
CARDS
We are happy to
accept MasterCard and Visa credit card
payments, as well as payments by Maestro and Delta. This facility can
be used
by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other
local
customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed
to make
space for credit card instructions.
If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the
appropriate
section.
Do not complete these
details unless you want to
pay by credit card, and to have the
lots posted.
We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the
bank

additional charge
for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their
details in
advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are
given after
posting, we will charge 1.9% extra
(Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Maestro
and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.
VIEWING; please note that lots can normally be viewed in our
shop during the one week prior to the auction. It is sometimes
possible
to view auction lots outside the normal times, but this must be by
special
arrangement.
