Most illustrations and logos for example have been removed. Although it is not in the easiest form to read, hopefully it will still bring you the information you need. (The first few lots have been tidied up to nearer their original style just to give you a better impression.)

After the main listings you will find various information and instructions. This is followed by a sample bid form, and a copy of the the notes that appear on the reverse of our bid forms.

This is a public auction, in which written/telephone/fax/e-mail bids are also accepted. If you are bidding with us for the first time, please bid by two of these methods with the same bids (e.g. by post and by fax, or by telephone and by e-mail), or bid in good enough time for us to get back in touch with you with any queries.

NEW BIDDERS;
Please note that bidders who are not already known to us are required to bid in the first instance by two different methods. The options available are email, telephone, fax, or post.
New customers attending one of our sales in person for the first time, and intending to bid, are invited to make themselves known before the sale starts. This saves the auctioneer from having to ask for a name during the sale.

General, 18 February 2002                                     Page 2                             Estimate £.

Collections and Mixed Lots.
                                                                                                                        Estimate (pounds sterling)

1     Very large accumulation of album pages (about 16 inches thick), many being US-produced
printed pages. All sorts of material, some sorted into folders. Would take many hours to sort
(and some hours even to view in detail), but we have seen a few more unusual pickings
      amongst much that is standard. Good variety. (Many 1,000s)     ..      ..         ..         ..          ..          £150.
2     World collection in seven hefty printed Scott International Postage Stamp Album volumes,
covering the period from early issues to about 1969/70, with printed pages throughout. Seems
to be complete except for the volume covering the C-E part of the alphabet. Looks sparse at
first sight, but actually contains some thousands of stamps.          ..         ..          ..           ..             £120.
3     Two similar albums; one for countries D-Z 1953-61, the other for K-Z 1944-54, with general
      scattering of stamps (100s).        ..         ..         ..         ..         ..         ..         ..         ..         ..         ..      £20.
4     Box with thousands of packets which may at some time have been in order. Much USA seen
(inc. plate blocks), but the box covers the world with few exceptions. Mainly off-paper –
looks like a mix between a dealer’s stock and an accumulation. Much is cheap, but numbers
      of medium-value stamps also seen, mint, sets/part sets, etc.       ..           ..           ..         ..             £100.
5     Extensive world lot in 24 binders, each with clear pocketed pages. Appears to be a collector’s
accumulation rather than collection – some on piece, many duplicated, much USA. main
value simply in sheer numbers, but would be worth trimming down. (Many 1,000s)     ..      ..          £85.
6     Medium carton with an interesting mix. Album leaves, stockleaves, packets, loose stamps,
covers, etc. all included, of a wide variety of age and country. Common are included, but also
many slightly better, some sets and miniature sheets, and some less commonly seen material.
      (Many 1,000s)         ..           ..         ..          ..         ..          ..            ..          ..           ..           ..             £75.
7     Medium box with hundreds of pocketed pages containing USA and world countries’ stamps,
some covers, postcards, some blocks/m.s. of 1960s/70s thematic/c.t.o. material. A world
      range, but collected in the USA. (Many 1,000s)          ..           ..            ..           ..           ..            ..   £60.
8 Box with the remains of a larger world collection. Contents include a few general world
albums (generally junior type, but some fairly old), a bundle of remainder club books, a few
  covers, etc. (1,000s) .. .. .. .. .. .. 50.
9 Strange mix in a large folder, with 19 sets of Liechtenstein 1950 Officials u.m., and 9 sets of
1968-69 issue u.m., and mixed other countries early to modern on stockcards, often with
  medium values, and some cheaper stuff. (100s) .. .. .. 50.
10 A bundle of 20 remainder club exchange books with a mix of UK, Commonwealth, Europe
and Overseas, early to modern, mint and used. Prices are a maximum of one third catalogue
  – in some cases much less. Remainder PTSA approx.£445. .. .. 50.
 11 A similar lot, 21 books, PTSA approx.£409. .. .. .. .. 50.
 12 A similar lot, 22 books, PTSA approx.£374. .. .. .. .. 50.
13 Old (spaces up to about 1931) printed album (broken, with some pages missing) with a
world collection (mint and used, some from later periods on added pages). Decent general
  mix although picked in places. (1,000s) .. .. .. .. 40.
14 Late-19th to mid-20th Century colln. of mainly used in large printed Minkus Comprehensive
  album. (1,000s) .. .. .. .. .. .. 30.
15 Stockbook with an interesting mint range of Europe, Overseas, and Commonwealth, mainly
  approx. 1920s-70s. (c.600) .. .. .. .. .. 28.
16 Many thousands of stamps (off and on-paper) in packets and envelopes in medium box.
Much is common, but certainly not all the commonest. .. .. .. 26.

18 Three various stockbooks – two are very general, one is mint only (100s) .. 20.
19 Mainly mint seln. mainly of miniature sheets/blocks (c.50) inc. UK 1990 Greetings pane
  l.m.m., Liechtenstein 1936 Philatelic m.s. u.m., 1959 Pope Pius sheet (20) u.m., a few
  Canada, and others. .. .. .. .. .. .. 20.
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (vat-inclusive) will be added to all sale prices.

we do not allow drinks at the viewing tables, but you are welcome to bring drinks down from the bar
once the auction has started.

* If you find time is tight to get bids posted in time, we are happy to accept bids by telephone, fax or email. Please always use first class post for sending bids.

to time. Explanations of our terms, principles, practices, etc. can be had simply by asking at any time.
* A Buy or Bid Sale will be held as normal - see back of Bid Form for details.

There is no VAT added to the price of lots, no handling charge to buyers, and no fee for using credit or debit cards; simply the buyer’s premium of 10% (and postage at cost when goods are sent out to clients).

NORMAL BIDDING STEPS
We list here our normal bid steps for your information. This may be of help to bidders who are unable to
attend the sale, as any written bids received which do not fit our normal pattern would usually be taken
down to the next normal step. (We keep to these increments as much as possible, but do sometimes
change if circumstances make it desirable.)
Up to £20, bids are in £1 steps. From £20 to £30, bids are in £2 steps.
From £30 to £50, bids are in £2 or £3 steps (i.e. £30, £32, £35, £38, £40, £42, £45, £48, £50).
From £50 to £100 in £5 steps. From £100 to £200, bids are in £10 steps.
From £200 to £300, bids are in £20 steps.
From £300 to £500, bids are in £20 or £30, and above this in 5% to 10% steps.

THIS IS HOW YOU CAN BID;
In Person. This is a public auction, and bids are made in the traditional manners.
Bids by post. Please use the Bid Form supplied, and send first class.
Telephone bids will be accepted at any time before the sale (but the earlier the better). These bids should be confirmed in writing, even if the written confirmation will not reach us until after the auction.
Fax bids should be sent to us on 0131.478 7021. Please use the bid form that comes with your auction catalogue. Our machine will be operative during our stated opening hours from now until the date of the sale. As well as this, it will operate 24-hours from 10am on Saturday 19 January until 3pm on Monday 21 January. Please do not fax bids to us after that time.
E-mail bids should be sent to us at auction@stampauctions.org at any time from the moment you receive this catalogue until 3pm on Monday 21 January. Please do not e-mail bids to us after that time. Please use the format and wording used on the bid form that comes with your auction
catalogue. (We have an alternative email of stamps@cableinet.co.uk if you have any problems. .)

CREDIT CARDS

We are happy to accept MasterCard and Visa credit card payments, as well as payments by Switch and Delta. This facility can be used by room purchasers (who pay their accounts at the auction), by other local customers (who pay their bill in our shop), and by postal buyers.
In order to deal with postal clients, our bid forms have been designed to make space for credit card instructions. If you want your purchases charged in this way, please complete the appropriate section.
Do not complete these details unless you want to pay by credit card, and to have the lots posted.

We have negotiated good rates with our bank, and are able to absorb the bank charges for this service ourselves, and therefore there is no additional charge for the use of this facility, as long as postal bidders give us their details in advance of posting. Only for postal buyers where card details are given after posting, we will charge 1.9% extra (Visa/MasterCard) or 18p (Switch and Delta), plus cost of posting receipt slip.

Coming to the auction ?
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - you can bring things along for sale on the night. We charge 25p per
lot entry fee, and 10% commission on sales (1% optional insurance).
All sorts of things sell well - single stamps, sets, country collections, empty albums, mixed boxes,
and so on. If you have a number of lots to enter you can pick up a supply of forms from the shop in
advance.
Lots can be enetered for the Buy or Bid Sale in advance at our shop, by appointment. Small lots (single stamps, sets, single covers or cards, etc; i.e. that will fit on one of our standard large forms) are charged at the normal 25p entry fee, but any lots larger than this are charged £1 each entry. (The 25p entry still applies to larger lots if they are entered for sale on the night.)

FORTHCOMING AUCTIONS; Our next stamp auction will be on 25 March 2002.
This auction is conducted according to the "Philatelic Auctioneers Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale" (available
 if requested).
A Buyer’s Premium of 10% (inclusive of global v.a.t.) will be added to the sale price of all lots.
Postal Bidders should remember that they may give alternative bids, or state a total spending limit.
Telephone bids are accepted, but must later be confirmed in writing.
Material can be accepted at any time for inclusion in future sales. Our commission is 10% of the sale price, plus administration fee of 90p per lot + £4.25 per vendor (all plus v.a.t.). Full details on request.
We DO NOT charge buyers a handling charge per lot, nor is there VAT added to any sale prices.
Please bid early. In the case of equal bids, the lot will be sold to the person whose bid was received first (unless free bidding in the room equals the top book-bid, although the Auctioneer will try to regulate the bidding in such a way as to avoid this).
Apart from viewing the lots in person, you can get a better description of any lot, by telephoning or writing.
(Photocopies are available, at a charge of 15p per copy plus postage.)
Remember the Buy or Bid Sale - bring items along on the night. We will try to sell them for you, at a charge of 10% + 25p (optional insurance 1% extra). Have a look at what’s on offer before and during the main auction. You can buy items outright or place a bid. (Larger lots delivered to our shop are charged £1 per lot entry fee.)
The annual subscription for our auction catalogues (paper copy) is currently £4 for inland addresses. If you are not already on our mailing list, please send us £4 with a note of your name and address. Regular bidders and buyers may qualify for free renewal. Rates abroad are EEC countries £4, other European countries £5, Overseas £8.
Successful postal bidders should note that postage stamps are not an acceptable means of paying your account.
Prices realised for this sale will be published with our next catalogue. If you are not normally on our mailing list, the List of Prices Realised can be had by simply sending us a stamped addressed envelope. Alternatively, you can be put on our auction mailing list (see above).
The telephone number at the Stewart’s-Melville Pavilion is  0131.551 2331 or  0131.552 1515. On the evening of the sale only you can use our mobile telephone number 07974 962649 (at other times it is very seldom switched on, and we do not collect text messages or respond to "missed calls" on our mobile).
Open Bids ("Buy Bids") are not normally accepted. If such bids are made, they will be taken to mean a bid of ten times the printed estimate.
