This is a simple preview of our auction to be held
on 21 June 2010 (NB; this is changed from the previous provisional date
of 14 June). For those not familiar with our
auctions, we hold a public sale in Edinburgh every few weeks. Most
auctions are
principally of stamps (with limited other items), and about every third
auction is "Stamps and Collectables" with stronger sections of these
other categories. The notes below will expand as the cataloguing of the
sale progresses, so please look back later to get a flavour of the
auction. General
auction information at this link.

Above right; 1915 £1
Treasury note overprinted in red for use by
British Expeditionary Forces in Turkey, “The Dardanelles
Overprint”. A rare note but in quite poor condition, probably grading
as “good” (heavy creases
and folds, torn about 2cm into at left, some stains, etc., and some
violet colour rubbed
on reverse). TR15 (cat.£2,000 for VG). Estimate £500.
Right; North of
Scotland Bank Ltd.; 1907 (1
May)
£1 note, overprinted diagonally in red “The North of
Scotland and Town
& County Bank Limited/in which is incorporated/The North of
Scotland Bank Limited”. A
rare note. In James Douglas’s Scottish
Banknotes (1975) he reports
Town & County Bank
notes being overprinted in a similar way, but makes no reference to
North of Scotland Bank
issues being treated thus. Would probably grade as Fine – the note is
intact and colours are
strong, but much wear, numerous folds and creases, grubby marks
especially on the
reverse, etc. Estimate
£500.

Fairly
typical of our regular stamp auctions. This sale has a decent range of
collections and bulk lots, some very attractive Commonwealth
(particularly George V), country collections, a range of UK, and so on.
One group worthy of comment is a 1979 investment portfolio, comprising good quality Commonwealth stamps, which 31 years ago cost £15,000 but is only expected to raise about £4,000 now ! (Not a case of bad prices now, but of overinflated prices then.) |
